Does politics ever seem to you to be an undecipherable conundrum? It certainly does to me.
First let me tell you that I am not a political animal. I have never felt comfortable following any particular popular belief in any area of life. I was raised by a strict fundamental minister father, but could never accept that philosophy. The more mature I got the more that belief system became a dilemma for me. At the same time he encouraged me to think for myself and to not just follow the crowd - any crowd.
This past weekend in the United States in the South Carolina Republican Primary Election we observed what appeared to have been a last minute reversal in the conservative so-called religious right, swinging their vote to Newt Gingrich. Apparently that reversal was based on the emotional appeal of his debating skills, not his record in Washington or his character.
Conservative Republicans always tout “family values” as one of their primary causes. How can they possibly justify an endorsement of Mr. Gingrich’s lifestyle? I listened carefully when he was interviewed about this issue after the election, and he indicated that he had asked for forgiveness and is now a church-going loyal husband.
Oh Please! Excuse me, but I don’t buy it.
My now deceased Republican Baptist minister father must be shaking his fist in the heavens. It would be interesting to hear what he might say. When will we wake up and stop voting for dishonest politicians who make millions in politics, with questionable personal values, and then give us a song and dance around the issues when they surface in political debates.
My opinion may not amount to diddly-squat (one of my father’s favorite sayings), but at least I feel better for having said it.
Enough of my soap box. It is unusual for me to write anything about politics, and I may not ever do it again. My website, Betty's House . . . Life After MS, and companion newsletter, Journey to Wellness, attest to my penchant for not following the crowd. I invite you to visit my website. I think you'll find something of value, especially if you have a physical challenge.
